Sluq’, eulachon grease, was made using large cedar boxes at sluq’ camps. The sputc, eulachon, are first put in the stink box, where they would ferment unit their eyes become pink in colour. Once the eyes change colour, they are ready for cooking in the cook box, which was done by either placing hot rocks into the cook box to boil the water or building a very controlled fire underneath the metal bottom. Sluq’ camps are always placed along the river for easy access to the fish and water needed for cooking. Once cooking, the sputc are mashed to release all of the oil from their cells. As the oil floats to the surface, it is skimmed off and prepared for second cooking. The second cooking ensures that the grease is free of any impurities, which creates a midler flavour and lasts longer. This sluq’ was traded far and wide for goods and is known to be healthy and delicious.
