Sputc (eulachon)

Sputc, eulachon, were traditionally caught at the Bella Coola River’s mouth, processed into grease, packed into bentwood boxes and carried up the mountain on the sluq’alh, grease trail to Tl’ina Tl’ina, now know at Kleena Kleene, where the grease was traded. Every year a sputc ceremony is conducted in the spring when the sputc are to return, the sputc pole is dressed in a new cedar cape and apron, and songs and dances celebrate their return.
